The ES(O)L Special Interest Group is one of the fourteen SIGs at IATEFL, and its main focus is on English for Speakers of Other Languages, as it is known in the UK, or English as a Second Language, its more common name around the world. Our members’ main interest is working with language learners who have come to settle in a country where English is the major or predominant language and classes may include refugees, asylum seekers or migrant workers.

Our main objective is to disseminate good practice in ESL and ESOL through our membership and to promote models of excellence in these fields to ELT professionals in UK and abroad through workshops, seminars and conferences and through publishing summaries of these events and the papers presented at them, as well as reviews and reflections on the field in our newsletter.
